Truex Jr Drafts the Right Bottle for Bud Shootout Pole

Jerry Markland/Getty Images for NASCAR

Unofficially the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race of the season, the 2012 Budweiser Shootout, the world's top stock car racing stars are unleashed on the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway a weekend ahead of the prestigious Daytona 500. Open to the drivers who clinched a top-25 finishing position in the overall Sprint Cup Series driver standings last season, past winners of Daytona Cup Series events who are still ineligible through points are also granted entrance into the 34th running of the Budweiser Shootout. Started as a 20-lap sprint event in 1979, the Budweiser Shootout's 2012 edition will consist of 75 laps divided by two segments (a 25-lap and 50-lap part) for the ultimate Saturday night spectacle under the lights of the Daytona oval.

Settled by 25 special bottles of Budweiser beer, the starting lineup was drawn by the participating drivers of the non-points race. Unlike the pressures of qualifying for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event (a sensation that will certainly affect drivers during Sunday's qualifying for the Daytona 500), the Budweiser Shootout draw was a more leisure occasion where fans were reacquainted with their favourite NASCAR drivers. From the massive cheers for Dale Earnhardt Jr to the more colourful choir of cheers and boos for Kyle Busch, the 2012 Budweiser Shootout field was slowly set with many top starting spots selected early. One of the early drivers, Kyle Busch, drew a front-row 2nd place spot for the Saturday night event.

When the draw concluded, Martin Truex Jr left the ceremony with the Budweiser Shootout 2012. A field being led by a pair of Toyota Camrys (Truex Jr's #56 NAPA car for Michael Waltrip Racing and Busch's #18 M&Ms machine owned by Joe Gibbs Racing), the Japanese-derived auto brand has yet to win the Budweiser Shootout. Behind the all-Toyota front row, Brad Keselowski's #2 Miller Lite Dodge will start from the 3rd place position with Jamie McMurray joining on the second row for this Daytona race. With David Ragan starting 5th in the 2012 Budweiser Shootout, the top-5 drivers for this event are all non-winners of the Daytona non-points race.

Parting with the Penske Racing team in a highly eventful departure in the off-season, the defending winner of the Budwieser Shootout Kurt Busch drew a 6th place spot. The older Busch will be driving a Chevrolet in Sprint Cup competition for the first time for Phoenix Racing. Kurt Busch's former car, the #22 Penske Racing Dodge, will be driven by AJ Allmendinger in his maiden race for Penske Racing.

Other former winners of the Budweiser Shootout will be starting the Saturday night with the additional challenge of a deep race position. Coming off his third championship season in 2011, two-time Shootout winner Tony Stewart will start his #14 Chevrolet from the 15th position. Starting 18th will be the 2005 Budweiser Shootout winner and five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. Johnson's #48 Chevrolet may easily have the support of new Hendrick Motosports teammate Kasey Kahne placed just one spot behind. Budweiser Shootout victor in 2009 and 2010, Kevin Harvick will start his #29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in 22nd spot. The race's title sponsor is also worn on the body panels of Harvick's Chevrolet. Fortunately for Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick, the Daytona International Speedway is a renowned restrictor plate track providing the speed for drivers to realistically launch their charge to the front.

The 2012 Budweiser Shootout is set to start at 8:10 PM Eastern time and will be televised on Fox in the United States as well as TSN2 in Canada.

Harvick Dominates In Rain-Delayed Pocono Debut

Photo Credit: Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images

(August 7, 2011)
LONG POND, Pa.—Thanks to fuel-saving technique and opportune late cautions, Kevin Harvick had enough gas to survive a green-white-checkered-flag finish in Sunday’s rain-delayed Good Sam RV Emergency Road Service 125 and win the Camping World Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway.

The victory was Harvick’s first in three starts in the series this year and the 10th of his career. Kyle Busch finished second, followed by James Buescher, points leader Johnny Sauter and Austin Dillon.

When the race went three laps beyond its scheduled distance of 50 laps, the only question was whether Harvick had enough fuel in his tank to go the extra 7.5 miles. There was no question about the quality of his ride.

“I didn’t have anything for Kevin,” said Buescher, who lost second place to Busch on Lap 46. “He was in a league of his own.”

Harvick didn’t come to the pits on Sunday, having changed tires for the last time on Lap 15 under caution for rain the day before. The race was suspended two laps later. Harvick said his truck was so strong that he didn’t want to sacrifice track position for fresh rubber.

“I think you saw the 18 (Busch) drive back up through there with tires,” Harvick said. “Tires still meant something. Our truck was just so fast that there was really no reason to give up the track position to come and get tires, since we were good on fuel.

“That’s one of the shortest races I’ve raced in a long time, and the strategy changes a little bit. You’ve got to get out there quick and try to put yourself in position quick on strategy, and you don’t have a lot of chances to make things happen if you’re off the pace.

“They (the team) just did a great job of hitting it right off the truck, and that makes life easy.”

NASCAR called the fourth caution of the race on Lap 32, after a smoking chunk of Nelson Piquet Jr.’s flat right front tire sheared off in the middle of the racing surface on the Long Pond straight.

The caution laps provided cover for those who might have been short on fuel—notably Harvick.

Nevertheless, Harvick, wary of the possibility of a green-white-checkered-flag finish, began shutting off his engine entering Turn 1 to save fuel. But a caution on Lap 37 for a wreck involving David Starr, Brendan Gaughan and Peyton Sellers necessitated the fifth caution and gave Harvick the cushion he needed to make it to the finish of the race.

On Lap 42, Sellers stalled on the access to pit road to cause the sixth caution. Harvick pulled away on the restart on Lap 46, while Busch and Buescher battled for the second position. Harvick held a comfortable advantage, when contact from Dillon’s Chevrolet sent Todd Bodine’s Toyota spinning on Lap 49 to send the race to overtime.

Underdog Unleashed: Regan Smith Claims Darlington Cup Win

Photo Credit: Geoff Burke/Getty Images for NASCAR

Regan Smith arrived in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series in 2007 as a co-owner of the Ginn Racing #01 Chevrolet (driving alongside Mark Martin). A promising young talent, Smith's career hit a stumble in 2008. After one-full season in the Sprint Cup where achieved this 2008 season's Rookie of the Year title and almost won the race at Talladega, Smith received the short end of the stick due to multiple team mergers. First with the Ginn Racing team merging with Dale Earnhardt Incorporated in 2007, Chip Ganassi with Felix Sabates Racing's organization would join after the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Limited to a four-car team, Smith's team was excluded in favour of Ganassi's #42 car driven by the more established Juan Pablo Montoya.

Undaunted by the setback and the highly-competitive nature of simply becoming a Sprint Cup series regular driver, Regan Smith signed with the #78 Furniture Row Racing team. A single car operation the Furniture Row Racing team was always regarded as an outsider compared to the NASCAR superteams which consisted of multi-car stables. Their base in Colorado rather than the traditional race shop in North Carolina went further to bring light to the inconformity of Furniture Row Racing. Despite being funded on a more modest basis, the Furniture Row Racing #78 Chevrolet was not enticed by the quick cash of a "Start and Park" effort. In every race the #78 Chevrolet competed, the team was seen performing at their full competitive ability. Teaming with Regan Smith in 2009, the partnership has pay dividends in 2011. After 95 races, Regan Smith secured his first top-10 finish at the 2011 Daytona 500. For the May 7th Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, the pairing scored a major coup for the underdog.

After a top qualifying run, the #4 Red Bull Toyota piloted by Kasey Kahne led the 43-car field to green starting the Showtime Southern 500. An initial run that lasted only 7 laps at Darlington Raceway, the #60 car of Mike Skinner spun to draw caution. As the field was regrouped, the Stewart/Haas Racing #39 Chevrolet driven by Ryan Newman snuck around the #4 car of Kahne to lead the race's early stages.

As the race progressed, another drivers taking stints at the front of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race included Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards. For much of the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, a three-way battle between Edwards, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne made up the complexion of the event combining to lead 259 of the scheduled 367 laps distance.

Struggling to please the temperament of the track known as the 'Lady in Black', the Hendrick Motorsport Chevrolets had a less than successful Saturday night race at Darlington. Collectively, the top-flight operation finished in modesty but were hardly a factor. In fact, the team did not lead a single lap at the 1.366-mile oval. The most dramatic display of the Hendrick Motorsport team's poor showing was Jimmie Johnson and his #48 Chevrolet spun twice during the event. Despite of this difficulty, the 5-time Sprint Cup champ would finish 15th in the final running order. Another on track incident for a Hendrick Motorsport Chevrolet resulted when Dale Earnhardt Jr's #88 car was nabbed by NASCAR as hitting a pit road commitment cone. Running in the top-10 at the time of the gaffe, Earnhardt Jr was assessed a drive-through pit road penalty costing him a lead lap placing which he would not be able to regain until very late in the Showtime Southern 500. In less eventful outcomes, Mark Martin finished 19th while Jeff Gordon led the Hendrick Motorsport group with a 12th place finish.

With just 9 laps remaining in the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington, a yellow flag disturbed the race led at this point by Kasey Kahne who had just snatched the lead from the #99 Ford of Carl Edwards. Setting up a final run, many of the cars at the front of the field pitted for fresh tires including Edwards and Kahne. However, a gutsy call was made by the #78 Furniture Row Racing team opting instead for track position at Darlington. Historically an ill-advised move, the car driven by Ragen Smith was hoping to take advantage of a recent resurfacing of the Darlington Raceway where older tires are not a sign of complete doom. Needing only to held off competitors for 5 laps, Smith could pull off a major upset in NASCAR Sprint Cup.

As the race restarted on lap 262, Regan Smith launched while a clan of NASCAR Sprint Cup cars were actively fighting for every position through the late stages of the Showtime Southern 500. The most heated affair through the last laps on track occurred between Kyle Busch's #18 Toyota and Kevin Harvick driving the #29 Chevrolet. With three laps to go, Harvick and Busch along with the #33 of Clint Bowyer were exiting turn 4 when the two cars came together. The latest of a series of minor expresses of disrespect through the race, this time their contact contributed to incidental contact with the Richard Childress Racing #33 Chevrolet. Bowyer crashed hard into the inner frontstretch wall. Bowyer was unhurt but the focus immediately shifted off the wrecked #33 car. During the time span when Clint Bowyer crashed, Kyle Busch had turned down into the rear right corner of Kevin Harvick's Chevrolet sending the #29 spinning in front of the field. An angry Harvick was able to avoid any major damage as the yellow flag dropped for the 11th and final time at Darlington.

Setting up a green-white-checkered restart, Regan Smith continued to lead having his #78 Chevrolet slipping through every corner as he tried to stay out front of the Darlington event. Charging the Furniture Row Racing car was the #99 Ford of Carl Edwards using four newer tires to challenge the leading opponent on older tires. Maintaining control and the 1st place spot, Regan Smith crossed the start-finish line winning the Showtime Southern 500. A first win for Smith NASCAR Sprint Cup, the victory lane celebration was also the first time the Furniture Row Racing team collected a win. As Regan Smith celebrated in victory lane, almost every competitor in the race voiced their deepest congratulations and praise for the 2011 Darlington Sprint Cup winner including 2nd place Carl Edwards.

However, while a magical upset victory occurred at Darlington Raceway, the tone of post-race was monopolized by the borderline dangerous hi jinks of Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick. On the cool down lap after the Showtime Southern 500, Harvick's #29 Chevrolet was running close behind the #18 Toyota of Busch. Two drivers known for their volatile on-track personas, the two expressed mutual disgust with each other through their cars. Eventually ending up on pit lane, Kyle Busch was blocked by Kevin Harvick's car as the Richard Childress Racing driver exited his vehicle while a crew member of the #29 ran towards the pair. As Harvick stepped out of his car and approached Busch's driver side window, the #18 Toyota violently accelerated ramming the #29 Chevrolet sending it coasting into a pit road wall. With both drivers angry following event, NASCAR called both drivers to the officials' hauler and later assessed them each a mild $25,000 fine.

The win in the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington by Regan Smith is the second time in 2011 a young, underdog driver won his first win on a historically significant NASCAR track. The first being Trevor Bayne's win at the Daytona 500 in February.

Harvick's Last Lap Hustle Captures Victory at Home in California

(March 27, 2011)

FONTANA, Calif.—Hometown boy (finally) makes good.

Kevin Harvick, who grew up in Bakersfield—about 150 miles from Auto Club Speedway—needed a last-lap pass of Jimmie Johnson to win for the first time at the 2-mile track, in his 18th attempt.

Harvick won Sunday’s Auto Club 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, powering his No. 29 Chevrolet to the outside of Johnson’s No. 48 Chevy through Turns 3 and 4 and beating Johnson to the finish line by .144 seconds.

Harvick, who restarted fifth with nine laps remaining, surged to the front on the final two laps, passing Kyle Busch and Johnson in the process. The victory was Harvick’s first of the season and 15th of his career and moved him up six spots in the points standings to ninth.

Busch, who led a race-high 151 laps, came home third, followed by Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman. Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Brian Vickers, Kasey Kahne and polesitter Juan Pablo Montoya completed the top 10. Edwards took over the series lead by nine points over Newman.

Busch held the lead until Lap 198, when Johnson passed him to the inside after the cars crossed the stripe. The duel between Busch and Johnson allowed Harvick to gain ground.

A caution on Lap 185 of 200, after Bobby Labonte blew a right front tire and slammed the Turn 4 wall, meant decision time for the crew chiefs. With Labonte’s wrecked car blocking the entrance to pit road, the pits remained closed until Lap 189, when Labonte’s car was dragged to the garage by a wrecker.

Busch, Johnson, Tony Stewart, Bowyer, Harvick, Newman and Edwards stayed on the track during the caution, with Kenseth leading a group of cars to pit road.

“Those guys just started to race,” Harvick said. “They got side by side, and we were able to pull up in there. The more laps we got on our tires, the better we were, but I was really nervous about that last call—staying out—but it all worked out in our favor, and we were able to make up ground.

“(Crew chief) Gil (Martin) obviously knew that we were better after the tires had air in them (as pressure built during green-flag runs), and it all worked out today.”

Johnson’s battle with Busch opened the door for Harvick, who led one lap—the one that counted.

“If I could have gotten by the No. 18 (Busch) a lap sooner, maybe that would have made the difference, and I would have had enough of a margin to hold off the No. 29, but he was rolling on the top,” Johnson said. “I did all I could. I was dead sideways. I think I hit the fence one time off of (Turn) 2, chasing Kyle, with the right rear first because it was sliding off the corner.”

After a cycle of stops that began when Busch pitted from the lead on Lap 138, Busch held a 6.5-second lead over Stewart, who began to make up ground throughout the ensuing green-flag run. Stewart had erased all but 1.3 seconds of Busch’s advantage when another cycle of green-flag stops widened the lead to 2.5 seconds.

Andy Lally’s spin off Turn 4 on Lap 170, however, brought out the third caution of the race and bunched the field for a restart on Lap 175. Busch and Stewart took the green flag side-by-side, with Busch in the outside lane, and the driver of the No. 18 Toyota pulled away to a half-second lead within three laps.

Notes: Sunday’s race was Harvick’s 39th at Fontana in NASCAR’s top three series. He is winless in 17 NASCAR Nationwide Series and four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts. He finished third in Saturday’s Royal Purple 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race. … Harvick’s victory was the first at Fontana for team owner Richard Childress. … Harvick teammate Paul Menard finished 16th, improving on his previous best finish of 18th at Fontana. Menard, who is seventh in the standings, has personal-best results at all five tracks this season. … Dale Earnhardt Jr. came home 12th and fell to 12th in points, 31 behind Edwards.

Kyle Busch Wins Second Straight Nationwide Race of Season in California

FONTANA, Calif.—Kyle Busch drove it like he stole it over the final 13 Laps at Auto Club Speedway, because that’s exactly what happened in Saturday’s Royal Purple 300 Nationwide Series race.

About the only thing he didn’t get was a grand larceny charge.

Thanks to a two-tire call with 13 laps left, Busch exited the pits with a five-second lead over runner-up Carl Edwards and won a race in a No. 18 Toyota that was, at best, a third-place car.

Busch’s victory kept a litany of streaks intact. Busch won his third straight event in NASCAR’s top two national series, his third straight Nationwide Series race at Auto Club Speedway and the seventh straight Nationwide race at the 2-mile track for Joe Gibbs Racing, dating to Tony Stewart’s victory in 2008.

The win, Busch’s fourth in the past five races at Fontana, gave him 46 career wins in the series, three short of the series record of Mark Martin, who finished eighth Saturday.

"I think it’s pretty satisfying when you can win one like that," Busch said. "I mean, it’s great to go out there and kick everybody’s butt and win the race and just come to the media center and go home. But today, it’s a little bit more fun.

"I don’t know why, but it’s like you’re working your butt off all day long, and it’s like ‘Aw, man, it’s going to be a third today. That kind of stings, but it’s still decent.’ And then you end up making a pit call like that, where nobody else does it, and you’re like, ‘Damn, we’re going to win this thing,’ and you get all jacked up."

Busch took the lead during an exchange of late-race pit stops and expanded it with the two-tire call on Lap 137 of 150. When Busch exited the pits with new right-side tires, he had the five-second lead over Edwards.

Though Edwards and third-place Kevin Harvick closed fast on four new tires during the final 12 laps, they ran out of time. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. ran fourth and took the lead in the series standings by six points over Jason Leffler (11th Saturday). Elliott Sadler came home fifth.

Harvick, who pitted on Lap 134, said he never considered a two-tire call.

"Two tires never even crossed my mind," Harvick said. "If I had to do it again, I’d probably pit earlier and probably get on pit road a little harder. Whether it would have changed the outcome or not, I don’t know. Still a good day for us."

Edwards, who came to the pits on Lap 132, wondered whether someone might try two tires but not in time to do anything about it.

"I did not think of two tires until we were jacked up on the left side of the car," Edwards said. "I thought, ‘Man, this is kind of close to the end. I wonder if somebody will take two, but I didn’t really think about it more than that.

"I guess it’s a little bit of shame that it didn’t come down to a real battle at the end, but it very well could have. A little bit of a slower stop on Kyle’s car or a caution or something like that, and it was going to be an insane finish."

Harvick was first off pit road during the fifth caution—caused by Jeremy Clements’ spin in Turn 2—and took the green flag for a Lap 98 restart. Stenhouse, however, surged from fourth to the top spot on Lap 99.

Stenhouse, who had perhaps the best short-run car in the field, held the lead until Edwards regained it on Lap 109. But Harvick began to show his strength as the green-flag run progressed, and the driver of the No. 33 Chevrolet made short work of Edwards on Lap 115 to pace the field.

(November 20, 2010)

HOMESTEAD, Fla.—Kyle Busch pulled away from Kevin Harvick during a 23-lap run to the finish to win Saturday’s Ford 300 Nationwide Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Harvick ran second, followed by 2010 series champion Brad Keselowski, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Trevor Bayne.

With his 13th victory in 29 starts this season, Busch extended his single-season win record. The victory was his 43rd in the Nationwide Series, leaving him five behind all-time leader Mark Martin.

Danica Patrick qualified fifth, pitted early and led four laps—her first of the season—by staying out while others pitted under caution on Lap 24. Soon after a restart on Lap 28, however, she dropped back to 21st in the running order. She finished a career-best 19th in her 13th start in the series.

After winning the owners championship in his own No. 18 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Friday night, Busch secured the Nationwide owners’ title for Joe Gibbs Racing on Saturday. Stenhouse clinched Raybestos rookie of the year honors.

Notes: Keselowski scored his 26th top-five finish of the year, a single-season record. … The victory was Gibbs’ 49th in the past three seasons. Busch has 31 of those. ... Busch led 153 of 200 laps.

Kasey Kahne Clobbers Cup Field for Homestead Pole

Photo Credit: Jason Smith/ Getty Images for NASCAR

Homestead is the home stretch for the 36-race NASCAR Sprint Cup series of 2010. A 1.5 mile true oval track, the Homestead-Miami Speedway plays host to one of the closest three-way points battles since the Chase for the Sprint Cup format was innovated by NASCAR in 2004. With Hamlin, Johnson and Harvick separated by only 46 points entering the final race, the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup appears have the potential of needing all of the event's 267 laps.

Breaking a two-race pole streak Ford Motor Company products in the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Kasey Kahne stormed to the Ford 400 pole his #83 Red Bull Toyota. Rounding the 1.5 mile in a time of 30.525 to take the final pole of 2010, Kahne and the Team Red Bull narrowly nicked Phoenix race winner Carl Edwards by a margin of just 0.031 seconds on the track. As qualifying concluded and the grid was set for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, less than 7/10th of a second separates Kasey Kahne's lead time with the slowest race entry speed posted by 40th place Juan Pablo-Montoya.

Kahne's 4th pole of this season, this is the driver's first top time since making an early entrance into Team Red Bull Racing. Having parted ways with has long-time Sprint Cup team (the #9 car existing within Richard Petty Motorsports) after the fall Charlotte event, Kasey Kahne is spending some early seat time inside the #83 Toyota preparing for a full season for 2011.

The Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing #1 Chevrolet of Jamie McMurray starts 3rd in this final event in afairy tale season for a driver many motorsport insiders wrote off prior to his victory at this year's Daytona 500. Bill Elliott is another continuing to make notable appearances in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. The Dawsonville, Georgia 1988 NASCAR Cup champion positioned the #21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford in 4th. The #43 Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) Ford driven by AJ Allmendinger allowed 3 of the top-5 vehicles starting at the front of the Ford 400 to display a Blue Oval badge. A solid top-5 for Allmendinger within the uncertainty of RPM's 2011 operation, a bright spot for the embattled Ford team is qualifying where at least one team car started in the top-10 for 8 of the final 10 races.

In regards to the much anticipated final showdown Sunday for the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup, second place in the points Jimmie Johnson starts in the best spot. Qualifying his #48 Lowes Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports 6th for the Ford 400, Johnson's so-called "drive for five" championships has the driver favoured (at least for the beginning of the event) to repeat the title victory which he's achieved the past four seasons.

Buried in 37th, current Chase for the Sprint Cup points leader Denny Hamlin #11 FedEx Toyota will be need to pick up considerable ground over the 400 mile distance to complete the eagerly-awaited spoiling of Jimmie Johnson's Sprint Cup series dominance. A difficult job, breaking through the field of the Homestead-Miami Speedway NASCAR Sprint Cup race is a custom for Hamlin having never started better than 25th in previous qualifying attempts at the 1.5 mile oval. Last year, the #11 Toyota of Denny Hamlin won the season's final event starting 38th on that day.

Third 2010 Sprint Cup contender Kevin Harvick will also be required to make up some race distance after a lackluster time trial run. Starting better than Denny Hamlin in 28th place, Harvick's #29 Chevrolet will attempt to regain the series point lead honours which were stripped from the Richard Childress Racing pilot due to the Chase reformatting after Richmond.

With engine set to roar at 1 P.M. Eastern for the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup series finale Ford 400, expectations are to see a competitive event amongst the 43 who all have something to prove prior to the checkered flag.

Harvick Cruises to Richmond Nationwide Series Win

(September 10, 2010)
RICHMOND, Va.—Polesitter Kevin Harvick held off Nationwide Series points leader Brad Keselowski during a 40-lap run to the finish to win Friday night's Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway.
In the first race at Richmond and third overall with NASCAR's new Nationwide car, Harvick crossed the finish line .256 seconds ahead of Keselowski, who extended his championship lead to 373 points, over Carl Edwards, who ran 10th. Trevor Bayne finished third, tying his career best. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. came home fourth, followed by Reed Sorenson.
The victory was Harvick's third of the season and 37th of his career, third all-time in the series. The owner/driver for Kevin Harvick Inc. led 170 of the 250 laps and was elated with the progress his No. 33 team had made with the new car.
"This is the future of our company, so we put a lot of effort into this program, knowing that all the other cars were going to go away, and knowing that we had to be good with this car," said Harvick, who gets his new chassis from Richard Childress Racing and his power from Earnhardt-Childress engines.
"RCR's been a big part of this as well, with the engines, the chassis and the engineering. Everybody's been working together. It's easy when you get started in the right direction to keep it going that way."
Keselowski likewise was pleased with his No. 22 Dodge team's progress with the new car, which is being phased in this year—with plans for full-time use in 2011.

"I was just glad that we were able to work on the car and make it better," Keselowski said. "That's been one of our larger struggles all year with this particular chassis. So I'm glad that we were able to do that—just a real good show for the new car on the short tracks.

"I think that's something to be proud of for the series. I think we can continue to work and make things better, but this was a great start."

Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Paul Menard, Kyle Busch and Edwards completed the top 10. A snafu in the pits cost Busch a chance for a record 11th win this season. Under caution on Lap 205, the quick-fill nozzle on one of Busch's fuel cans broke off and remained attached to the car as Busch left pit road.

Penalized for taking equipment from the pits, Busch restarted 21st on Lap 211 and worked his way up to ninth before the race ended.

Harvick Streaks Past Hamlin for Michigan Sprint Cup Win

Jason Smith/Getty Images for NASCAR

With 22 races in the books, the pressure is weighing heavily on a multitude of NASCAR Sprint Cup teams as the series arrives for their second yearly visit to the Irish Hills of Michigan. As 43 cars were led to the start of the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway, Kevin Harvick's 2010 season had been the year NASCAR race fans were long expecting from the driver who took over the vehicles of Dale Earnhardt Sr ten seasons ago. Leading the points ahead of Hendrick Motorsports pair of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson as well as the highly-energized Penske Racing lead veteran driver Kurt Busch, Harvick and Richard Childress Racing are riding high heading into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. On the other side of the points, several drivers such as Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jamie McMurray are on the outside of the top-12 Chase positions with Michigan being the 4th to last opportunity to gain valuable ground.

Polesitter Kasey Kahne driving the #9 Budweiser Ford was quickly dethroned from the top spot by a strong start from the #48 Lowes Chevrolet of Jimmie Johnson.Surprising in the light of Jimmie Johnson's NASCAR Sprint Cup career, Johnson has been winless in 19 previous races at Michigan International Speedway. Leading the Carfax 400's first 14 laps, Johnson's luck would not change at the race track. By lap 15, Johnson was hunted by the #16 Ford of Greg Biffle and passed for the 1st place position. With a history of good finishes at Michigan, Biffle was a definite presence through the first half of the Carfax 400 race. Returning to the NASCAR Sprint Cup race track for the first time since his private jet crash, Roush-Fenway Racing's founder Jack Roush witnessed first-hand the improving state of his Ford Fusions in competition.

Calmly, the first 200 miles of the race resulted in two cautions. The initial yellow flag was thrown for oil spewing from the blown engine of Kurt Busch's Dodge. Back-sliding 6 spots in the 2010 driver's point standings, Kurt Busch lost touch with the top half of the Chase but is still holds a 180 point cushion on 12th place Clint Bowyer. Compounded by poor finishes of Busch's teammate, the Carfax 400 was a tough day for Penske Racing. A track Penske Racing team owner Roger Penske within his business portfolio, the best race result from the 3-car team was 32rd for Sam Hornish Jr.

Ending Greg Biffle's stint in the lead after the #16 Ford led 3 times for 66 laps, Tony Stewart's #14 Chevy took over in front through the midpoint of the Carfax 400. Handing off the lead briefly over a pit stop, Stewart's rear-view mirror filled with the #29 Chevrolet of Kevin Harvick. Taking the lead for lap 111, Harvick stayed out in front for the longest consecutive period in the Michigan race. On the latter side of Kevin Harvick's 45-lap stint, a series of two-car incidents occurred to bring out yellows. Both conflicts residing in turn 4, Ryan Newman was first spun out with assistance coming from the Home Depot #20 of Joey Logano. After the race, Newman angrily confronted Logano over the lap 149 contact.

With one Chase contender involved in the lap 149 caution, top 12 drivers Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton wound up with damaged cars just 6 laps later. Running solidly in the top-10 up to that stage in the Carfax 400, Burton ended the race 24th while Gordon would find himself 27th in the final running order.

In a final caution for debris on lap 169, teams had three laps to plan for their final run. Opting for the superior control of new tires, Greg  Biffle led a contingent to pit road while Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and a few others chanced track position being more valuable. While Stewart led off the restart for 11 laps, his fast-moving former teammate Denny Hamlin flew by to lead lap 178. A different circumstance to the dominant (yet arguably boring to watch) performance in the June race, the #11 FedEx Toyota started buried in the back after the Joe Gibbs Racing team elected to switch to a back-up car. Denny Hamlin would lead 12 laps under the hot pursuit of the #29 Chevy. Kevin Harvick ate into the small interval to Hamlin up until he was able to make his winning move on lap 190.

As the choice to stay out proved to be the winning decision for Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle was able to charge to only 4th place at the end one position behind the #99 Ford driven by teammate Carl Edwards. With Matt Kenseth behind Biffle in 5th, Roush-Fenway Racing delivered 3 cars home in the top-5 motivated by their team owner's presence. Also having inspiring runs at the end was Martin Truex Jr 8th in the #56 NAPA Toyota and Elliott Sadler who brought his #19 Ford across for 9th place. Truex Jr overcome early difficulties having suddenly lost several positions early in the Carfax 400.

When selecting NASCAR Sprint Cup championship contenders at the beginning of the year, no one mention forwarded the possibility of Kevin Harvick leading the points following 23 races. Thanks to his victory in the Carfax 400, Kevin Harvick now leads by 293 points over Jeff Gordon with a Chase opportunity all-but guaranteed.

Fireworks All Around at Daytona as Harvick Claims Coke Zero 400

Photo Credit: Todd Warshaw/ Getty Images for NASCAR

Through the month of June, some NASCAR fans could argue that the latter 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup shows have equated to less than stellar competitions. With two events ending during suspect debris flag cautions which created a last race dash for the checkered flag, the art of active passes for the lead (not just exchanges due to pit stops) appeared to be a dying art form in this most popular stock car racing series. The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway a potent counter to the rather dull racing action.

With much ado about racing on the 31 year old asphalt surface, a sense of nostalgia hung over the 2.5 mile superspeedway compounded with Dale Earnhardt Jr's victory in a Wrangler-sponsored #3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. As the green green dropped for the Coke Zero 400, attention was turned to the present and a 90-minute race delay due to a light rain shower.

Setting the field on points based on a Friday rain-out of qualifying, the #29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevy of Kevin Harvick led the 43-car field to green. From the start, Harvick was destined to prove that the appointed pole position was worthy for himself and the RCR team. Briefly breaking away with a four-car pack, challengers to Harvick came fast and often. On lap 11, Jeff Gordon took the lead in the #24 Chevrolet for one lap and then Kyle Busch's #18 Toyota surged forward to a few laps prior to the competition caution.

With the field coming to the attention of their pit crews, Kevin Harvick's #29 retook the lead through a two-tire pit stop advantage over Kyle Busch. As the green flew, the field of Sprint Cup cars continued to fight hard within the Coke Zero 400. Surprises added to the lead pack of this Daytona restrictor plate event as Elliott Sadler, Martin Truex Jr and Sam Hornish Jr were enjoying season-best runs through the early stage of the Daytona Sprint Cup race.

Into the initial laps of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona, tires became a major buzz subject. On lap 28, contender Kyle Busch brought his Interstate Batteries Toyota to the attention of his Joe Gibbs Racing crew citing a loose wheel. After the stop, Kyle Busch in the #18 Toyota would rejoin the race in 38th place benefiting at least from the long 2.5 mile oval keeping him on the lead lap.

Kevin Harvick, able to retain the lead early in the run taking only right-side rubber only, began falling prey to the cars wearing four tires as the #29 was failing to keep grip on the paced Daytona surface. Harvick would fall to 14th while Kurt Busch driving the #2 Miller Lite Dodge led the pack. Sadler also led the race within the first 1/4 distance in his #19 Ford but the Penske Racing NASCAR teams came on strong as the #2, #12 and #77 would lead.

With pit stops occurring 30 laps prior, top cars such as the #48 Chevy of Jimmie Johnson and the #17 Ford of Matt Kenseth pitted with concerned with their tires. In fact, on the #17 Roush-Fenway Racing Ford, a massive chunk was missing out of one tire. On lap 59, a yellow flag fell on the field when debris from the #46 car lost right front tire. NASCAR waited several laps aon flying the caution same race teams were making pit stops.

On the resatrt on lap 64, Montoya sends the Target #42 Chevrolet to the lead. Having started the race from the rear in a backup car, #11 Toyota of Denny Hamlin had progressed quickly into the top-5 by lap 65. By lap 77, Hamlin claimed the lap lead allowing him to score five bonus points to the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. Showing some consistent strength, the Joe Gibbs Racing organization found their way to the front. Recovering from the tire problem of lap 28, Kyle Busch would resume leadership of the Coke Zero 400 right before the event's halfway mark ahead of Jimmie Johnson and Sam Hornish. The lead would be jockeyed around as the field neared green flag pit stops.

Amongst the exchange of cars reentering the track on lap 104, Kyle Busch was turned by the #42 of Juan Pablo Montoya down Daytona's superstretch. Acquiring hard front end damage, the #18 was retired on the apron of turn 3 with an understandably disgruntled Kyle Busch stepping out of his #18 Toyota. Sarcastically remarking that he wrecked himself, Busch left little hide his emotions of what he felt was avoidable contact from the #42 Chevy.

With a restart on lap 111, Montoya led over Mark Martin #5 Chevy (Martin's pit stop timing allowed him to gain this position). Well past halfway in the Daytona 400 mile race, the early tire issues seemed to have settled itself out. However, on lap 114 Matt Kenseth barely avoided setting off what could have been a multi-car crash through master car control. Experiencing a second tire related problem , the #17 Ford of Kenseth rejoined the field cleanly but an accident was destined to transpire within the Sprint Cup field on lap 116. In turn 3, the #6 Ford team of David Ragan had his second crash of the weekend when he collided with the #1 Chevy of Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray.

Multi-car organizations were a major factor for the Coke Zero 400. First with Penske Racing and then with Joe Gibbs Racing, the team that would emerge supreme at the end was Richard Childress Racing. While Kevin Harvick and the #29 team showed power early, the entire three-car team united at the front through the last 1/4 distance as #31 of Jeff Burton and the #33 belonging to driver Clint Bowyer began swapping the lead within the most aggressive final stints of the Coke Zero 400. Hoping to spoil the effort was the #2 of Kurt Busch who took the lead as a caution again flew on lap 141. The #17 Ford was finally claimed after averting so many potential wrecks. The #5 of Mark Martin and the #19 of Elliot Sadler were also involved in this incident which would only be a precursor to what would be a big wreck a few circuits following a lap 146 restart.

Running down the Daytona superstretch, Kurt Busch and Jeff Burton heatedly fought for position rubbing into each other. Burton got wobbly but caught his #31 car but contact was made once again with the #2 Dodge sending Kurt Busch sideways into the turn 3 infield. As the result of the contact up front, a chain reaction caused the #83 Toyota being driven by Reed Sorenson to be turned while traveling down the backstretch. This triggered a massive pile-up amounting to a wall of cars through turn 3 collecting at least 16 cars including the winner of the last two Cup races Jimmie Johnson.

Phenomenally, coming through the wreck nearly unscathed was the #88 Chevrolet of Dale Earnhardt Jr. While never having an ideal handling car within the Coke Zero 400, the Hendrick Motorsport #88 car was lucky for a change to not be caught in misfortune.

Necessitating a red flag to clean up the chaos, Mark Martin returned to he pit road with his #5 car on fire as some fast-acting members of the #48 helped removed the driver from the car. Fortunately, Martin was none the worst for wear following the scary ordeal. Involved in the accident, the #2 Dodge of Kurt Busch left with minor damage but with the persistent efforts of his Miller Lite Penske Racing pit crew was returned to racing action.

Creating a 8 lap dash to settle this NASCAR Sprint Cup race, the green flag flew with Clint Bowyer restarting on the outside as the #99 Ford of Carl Edwards started on the inside. The Richard Childress Racing three-car group all hung together in the draft making the efforts of other cars difficult. However, showing up to the front at just the perfect time, Jeff Gordon brought his #24 Chevrolet in front of Burton breaking the three-way draft on lap 156 and would swim to the lead one lap later. Just before the RCR team could retaliate, caution came out timely on lap 158 when the #77 of Hornish swept up to teammate Kurt Busch's #2 car out of turn 4 tapping himself into a wreck which involved the #19 Ford of Elliott Sadler who retired in the tri-oval after such a promising race early.

With a green-white-checker restart, the #29 of Kevin Harvick returned to the front surging past the #24 with a push from Kasey Kahne's #9 Ford. Into the last lap, the potential winner Clint Bowyer was sent out of control down the Daytona backstretch through a frenzy to the checkered flag. Since the accident happened as the field was already passing the #33 Chevy, no caution allowed the field to race back to the finish line for position. At the line, Kevin Harvick brought his #29 RCR Chevy home first followed by Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon. With many cars lost due to accidents, cars continued to wreck as they past the start/finish line.

After 4 and half hours which involved rain, a red flag and one of the most exciting 400 miles (actually 415 miles following 6 extra laps created by the green-white-checker restart) Daytona Sprint Cup race has ever experienced on the 2.5 mile superspeedway, Kevin Harvick took his second win of the season padding a healthy point advantage over 2nd place in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup standings.

Finishing fourth and now 11th in NASCAR Sprint Cup driver's points, Dale Earnhardt Jr ended up with his best performance in the last quarter of the season but your would not have been able to tell by the #88 Chevy driver's post-race interview. Describing as team as 'lucky rather than good' for the night, he confessed that the wrecks allowed the Hendrick Motorsport car to rise at the end. Though 4th at Daytona, Earnhardt Jr was unable to lead a single lap in the Coke Zero 400.

Upon surprises in the top 10 were several cars including both Red Bull Racing cars (Reed Sorenson in 8th and Scott Speed in 10th) as well as the TRG Motorsports #71 Chevrolet piloted by Mike Bliss for the weekend. A team vacated by Bobby Labonte two races prior unsatisfied that the #71 Chevy was going to be a start-and-park machine too often, the TRG Motorsports team went to distance. Also going the distance was the Tommy Baldwin Racing #36 Chevrolet which charged from 39th to 13th. Driven by former Sprint Cup regular Steve Park, the race team is still well out of the top 35 in car owner points after too many struggles to begin the season.

Entering into the second half of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup season next week at Chicagoland Speedway, Kevin Harvick now holds a commanding 212 point lead in the driver standings ahead of now 2nd place Jeff Gordon. Jimmie Johnson as well as #11 Toyota of Denny Hamlin lost considerable ground in the points since being caught on the major pile-up at Daytona.

Harvick Noses Ahead of McMurray to Win Aaron's 499 at Talladega

Photo Credit: Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR

The first restrictor plate race since the Daytona 500, NASCAR Sprint Cup cars entered the Aaron's 499 more seasoned than at Speedweeks this past February. Providing a NASCAR Sprint Cup record 88 lead changes between 29 different drivers, the 2010 race at Talladega Superspeedway was one of the most contentious battles of the still young stock car racing season.

Because of severe weather warnings in the Talladega county region, NASCAR's halting of race activities Saturday also erased Sprint Cup qualifying for the race. The Aaron's 499 field was set on car owner points following the event at Texas Motor Speedway last Monday. While the #48 Lowes Chevrolet of Jimmie Johnson with Matt Kenseth's #17 Ford starting alongside, 8 lead changes transpired in the first 10 laps settting the tone for the event. Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, Elliott Sadler and Joey Logano were some of the drivers taking 5 bonus points for leading the Talladega race through early hustling. Also grabbing the top spot in the Aaron's 499 race was the #88 Chevrolet of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Taking the lead first on lap 30, Earnhardt Jr would take the 1st place position 5 separate occasions for 8 laps total. Besides the time out front of the field, the #88 Hendrick Motorsports car appeared very comfortable for Dale Jr as he could move through the field with ease for much of the Aaron's 499 event.

A rather tame race through the first 75 lap distance, only the competition caution on lap 20 broke up the green flag dicing of Sprint Cup cars. The first caution for an on-track incident came when the Denny Hamlin's #11 FedEx Toyota slid off the frontstretch through the infield grass. Losing ground in this early race predicament, Hamlin recovered into the Aaron's 499 event to a top-5 finish for his #11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

Five laps following the restart for the Hamlin spin-out, a multi-car frontstretch accident claimed the first collection of vehicles in the race. Initiated when the #18 Toyota of Kyle Busch bumped the #36 Chevrolet of Johnny Sauter, the crash caught Matt Kenseth's Ford, Michael Waltrip driven #55 Toyota, Max Papis in the #13 Toyota and the #2 Dodge of Kurt Busch along with others. Out of the race due to the accident, Waltrip quipped in the garage to a Fox Pit Reporter that Kyle Busch fails to practice the race conduct he preaches.

Into the last 30 scheduled laps, the battles for the lead ceased as drivers were counting down to the final laps. Maintaining a single file pack, two driver would enjoy the longest lead runs in the Aaron's 499. Jeff Burton led 17 laps and Jamie McMurray 23 circuits towards the end. However, as the drivers braced for their final moves vying for the race victory, the Aaron's 499 would go into extra innings. Originally scheduled for 187 laps, the 3 periods of green-white-checker finishes extended the distance to 200 laps (over 31 miles further than anticipated).

The entire scenario started as Jeff Burton, Scott Speed, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon wrecked within the frontstretch tri-oval. While not contributing to the crash, the #24 Dupont Chevrolet was susceptible to damage due to a run-in with a friend turned apparent foe. The #48 of Jimmie Johnson squeezed Hendrick Motorsports teammate Gordon down below the yellow line on lap 183 placing the #24 Chevrolet in a very precarious position. Adding for fuel to an increasingly harsher fire between the Hendrick Motosports teammates, Gordon and Johnson have been making headlines as late after an on-track run-in at Texas on last Monday.

Entering into extra laps, the race restarted on lap 188 with Tony Stewart challenging McMurray only for the #1 Chevrolet to slip away until a second massive accident in turn 3 aborted the white flag call. Triggered when the Joey Logano's #20 Home Depot Toyota aggressively bump drafted the #39 Chevrolet of Ryan Newman sending Newman out of control exiting turn 3. Talking 9 out cars, the #47 Toyota of Marcos Ambrose, Brad Keselowski in the #12 Dodge, Bobby Labonte's #71 Chevrolet and the #83 Red Bull Toyota of Brian Vickers were among the cars collected. Also listed in receiving damage in the lap 189 crash, the #19 Ford of Elliott Sadler and the #77 Dodge of Sam Hornish Jr were also involved in the first major wreck at lap 84.

Because the extended distance, there were several cars and teams fretting about fuel economy into the final laps including both Earnhardt-Ganassi machines driven by Jamie McMurray and Juan Montoya. The second checkered flag attempt was thwarted when the #16 Roush Fenway Ford of Greg Biffle encountered fuel pick-up issues resulting in an incident where the #48 Chevrolet of Jimmie Johnson misjudged the slowing Ford and collided on the backstretch.

With fuel economy a growing worry for the #1 Earnhardt-Genassi Racing team, the race restarted for the third and final time with Jamie McMurray receiving the launch he needed with help of the #29 Chevrolet of Kevin Harvick. In a two-car draft, the pair of Chevrolets broke away into the white flag lap. Coming around for the final run down the front stretch tri-oval, Harvick searched for a way to pass McMurray's #1 Chevrolet. In a daring move, Kevin Harvick brushed the rear bumper of McMurray in such a way that made the #1 car just enough out of control to break his momentum. The yellow #29 Chevrolet ducked to the bottom of the track entering into a dead heat with the #1 car racing the last 50 meters to the start/finish line.

Though electronic timing made the declaration for victory anti-climatic, it wasn't until a photo finish until at the line where Kevin Harvick and the Richard Childress Racing fielded #29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet were comfortably named winners of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Aaron's 499 race at Talladega Superspeedway. With the #29 sponsor Shell/Pennzoil announcing a move for Penske Racing in 2011, Kevin Harvick, Richard Childress and the entire #29 RCR team celebrated knowing that the future is still yet to be determined.

Settling for second place, Jamie McMurray narrowly missed an opportunity to claim his 3 straight restrictor plate victory. Commenting on the pass in post race, McMurray provided some insight on the move from the #29 car. "I really thought that Kevin was going to go high. I felt like I was close enough to the yellow line that there was a lot more racetrack to the right, and it seemed like you could stall guys out more on the outside than you could the inside. And so I was really guarding against the outside, and when he went left, it did, it really loosens the car up. It's hard to explain to you guys that aren't in cars, but when there's someone directly behind you and they pull their car out of line really fast, it's like you pull a parachute in your car."
Both Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing Chevrolets made it on fuel as Juan Montoya finished in 3rd place.

With Denny Hamlin finishing 4th after the before mentioned troubles, the top-5 was rounded out by the the #5 Chevrolet of Mark Martin. Emerging at just the right time, Martin overtook his Hendrick Motorsports teammates to become the highest finishing driver in the camp. Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson encountering late race problems while Dale Earnhardt Jr faded to 13th place as the #88 was shut out of the draft.

Inside the top 10, David Ragan posted a strong 6th place finish in the #6 UPS Ford. His first top-10 run of the 2010 Sprint Cup season, Ragan is fighting to regain the 2008 form that almost sparked a birth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

In the final position within the top-10 finishers, the #09 Chevrolet of Phoenix Racing was driven up 27 spots by Mike Bliss. Falling short of the major victory at Talladega just one year before, Mike Bliss' quiet 10th place run comes as team owner James Finch placing a 'For Sale' sign on the doorstep of his entire racing operations Friday.

NASCAR Sprint Cup points following the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway has Jimmie Johnson retaining the lead by only 26 points over the new 2nd place runner Kevin Harvick. Two Hendrick Motorsports drivers showed the sharpest rise and fall in the points after Talladega. Mark Martin moved up 4 spots while Jeff Gordon lost 5 positions in the season standings.

Sprint Cup teams prepare to leave the restrictor plate race behind for a Saturday night affair at the Richmond International Raceway short track.

Harvick Strikes the Winning Note in NASCAR Nationwide Nashville 300

Kevin Harvick went from playing the blues after Friday's truck race to rocking the NASCAR Nationwide Series Nashville 300 event. Driving another outing in his Kevin Harvick Incorporated #33 Chevrolet, cross the finish line first for the second time in the early 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series.

The #20 Toyota of Joey Logano clinched the pole in qualifying for the Nashville 300 leading the Nationwide Series field with Kevin Harvick's #33 Chevrolet starting alongside. Unlike the rather dull Camping World Truck Series event, the Nationwide Series race provided a much more eventful competition.

With 8 caution breaking up the action, the a major collision occurred when the field regrouped after a previous yellow flag period. On the double-file restart, multiple drivers saw an opportunity to advance their positions. Dicing three-wide and later four-wide for spots on track at lap 113, the four-wide scenario proved unwise as Brendan Gaughan, Steve Wallace, Mikey Kile and Jason Keller entered turn three. With the #62 Rusty Wallace Racing Toyota of Gaughan hugging the apron as the track, teammate Steve Wallace drifted high tangling with Mikey Kile and Jason Keller. With Michael McDowell and the Roush-Fenway Racing driver Colin Braun also collected in the massive incident, the debris field of auto parts necessitated a red flag stoppage for over 14 minutes to clean up the turn 3-4 segment of the Nashville Superspeedway. Climbing out of his battered #66 Toyota under his own power, Steve Wallace could be seen hobbling in pain to the Ambulance and out of the in-front care center. On the #66 driver's twitter page, Wallace stated "Man that wreck hurt like hell". The cars of Wallace, McDowell and Keller were all retired from the event immediately after the crash.

Not anyway as severe as the lap 113 crash, two caution periods involved the dramatic exploits of two drivers. On lap 43, the #1 Pheonix Racing Chevrolet of James Buescher made contact with the #38 Great Clips Toyota of Jason Leffler through turn 2. With the #38 spinning into the wall, it took numerous laps before the Great Clips Toyota returned to competition. While the incident appeared largely unintentional, Leffler returned to the race track under a different impression. Heading down the frontstretch on lap 143, the damaged #38 Toyota pinched the #1 car against the wall in retaliation against Buescher.

The latest in on-track feuds in NASCAR, this incident comes after the two-race exchange between Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin at the end of 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series. Still fresh in many race fan memories, the on-track skirmish occurred at the Atlanta Sprint Cup race where this time Keselowski caught the ire of Carl Edwards. For the Nashville 300, NASCAR officials dealt with Leffler the same way they addressed Edward's payback, parking the #38 for the duration of the event. On Jason Leffler's twitter page, the driver posted after the race "Got crashed 40 laps in to the race! 38 great clips car was fast! Then all hell broke loose! Damm".

Under green, the Joe Gibbs Racing #20 of Joey Logano gave his Game Stop sponsor some valuable representative. Holding the top spot for 122 of the 225 laps at Nashville, Logano never gained ground after a final pit stop. Logano finished 8th in the race despite the speed he showed throughout Saturday.

Through closing laps, Kevin Harvick and crew chief Ernie Cope chanced a two-tire change as an advantage to gain track position. The gamble paid off as the #33 Chevrolet was able to repel the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and Penske Racing Dodges.

The final laps had the Braun Racing #32 Dollar General Toyota driven by Reed Sorenson mounting a charge on Harvick. Taking the runner-up position, Sorenson's hard-fought effort came short of a victory which Dollar General pledged would amount to a $50,000 donation to Autism charities.

Third place went to Nashville's Camping World Truck Series winner Kyle Busch. Eager to complete a sweep for the Nashville Easter weekend festivities, Busch commented that his #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was only a bit short of winning.

Both Penske Racing drivers Brad Keselowski and Justin Allgaier found top-5 finishes on the Nashville Superspeedway. Finishing 4th, the #12 of Allgaier bested his Sprint Cup racing teammate Keselowski driving the #22 Dodge by the single position. Beaten by his younger teammate, Keselowski was at least able to finish in front of arch-rival on-track Carl Edwards. Edwards' #60 Valvoline Ford, placing 6th on the day, was the only Roush-Fenway Racing runner to go incident-free through the 225 lap distance.

In 7th place, Scott Wimmer brought the #7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet across the finish lane for the season's best effort. Leading 18 laps, Wimmer will step aside from his driving duties with JR Motorsports last week at Phoenix as Landon Cassill takes over the #7 ride for 4 NASCAR Nationwide races.

After 5 races, the NASCAR Nationwide Series season driver's standings has five drivers within 61 points. Carl Edwards leads the group with just 16 markers separating him from Brad Keselowski.

Next week, the NASCAR Nationwide Series rejoins the NASCAR Sprint Cup race weekend at Phoenix International Raceway.
