As the series grew through the 1990s, NASCAR continued to tout the fan accessibility to the teams and drivers. However, perhaps becoming a victim of the auto racing series' own success, the shear increase of attention at every race track has led to heavier demands on limited time. Not only fans but sponsors and media request time with NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers or key team members whenever their away from their stock cars. Appearing just a few years ago that NASCAR Sprint Cup followers would need to accept tighter windows of time for meeting their favourite racer, fans can now become followers through the electronic social media of Twitter.
During the red flag period at the 2012 Daytona 500, Penske Racing's Brad Keselowski inspired a never-before experience that brought NASCAR Sprint Cup race fans closer to the sport through Twitter. Thanks to an Apple iPhone Keselowski carried on-board of his #2 Dodge Charger stock car, the first in-car Tweet was transmitted during a race along with a series of other messages. Bringing some much-needed amusement as NASCAR track crew worked to clean up and repair the jet dryer crash scene, Brad Keselowski became a sensation in social media winning almost 135,000 followers once the checkered flag dropped for the series' top event.
