When the 2011 Indianapolis 500 festivities start this upcoming May, the famous 2.5 mile Brickyard oval will celebrate 100 years since the first 500-mile event was run at the historic track. A monumental occasion that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is marking through an annual acknowledgement, the centennial year of the event will also be recognized by the United States Postal Service.
To be released fittingly during the month of May, the USPS will be selling a commemorative stamp to the 100 years of the Indianapolis 500. Set to feature the yellow and black Marmon Wasp which Ray Harroun piloted to the 1911 Indy 500 victory, this is going to be the second time the postal service will depict the vehicle's likeness on a stamp. In 1987, the Marmon Wasp was included as part of a Transportation Series themed USPS release. Along with the image, the stamp will also sport the lettering "INDIANAPOLIS 500" and "100 YEARS OF RACING" on the bottom.
The Indianapolis 500 centennial stamp will join other upcoming 2011 USPS special releases including the Latin Music Legends series, American Scientists, and a single stamp in honour of the 40th United States President Ronald Reagan.
